After-loss checklists

The first 72 hours after a loss

6 min read

The first three days after a loss are not the time to make big decisions. They are the time to do a small number of important things and let the rest wait.

Confirm the death has been pronounced and certified. If at home under hospice care, call the hospice agency. If unexpected, call 911.

Notify immediate family. Do not feel pressure to call everyone yourself — designate one or two people to share news on your behalf.

Choose a funeral home. You do not need to choose services yet. A funeral home will transport your loved one and hold them while you plan.

Pause non-essential obligations. Work, social events, and standing appointments can wait.

When you're ready, a Final Wishes Concierge can walk through the next 30 days with you.
