Executor responsibilities template

An executor's responsibilities, in order:

Locate and file the will with the probate court within the timeframe required by your state.

Obtain Letters Testamentary (your legal authority to act for the estate).

Inventory assets, debts, and accounts. Open an estate bank account.

Notify creditors. Most states require a published notice in a local newspaper.

Pay valid debts and final taxes.

Distribute remaining assets per the will. Obtain receipts from beneficiaries.

File a final accounting with the court. Close the estate.
